Swedish Metrum, one of the world’s leading energy and power quality measurement companies, has received a groundbreaking order from Tata Power in Mumbai. The order includes the provision by Metrum of energy and power quality systems to the electric distribution company Tata Power, which is one of the foremost power companies in India. After a thorough tender process, with fierce competition, Metrum was awarded the contract. The initial order is for 20 measurement instruments and system, with subsequent stages to larger full network implementation.

“This is a highly important reference order for us in India. The electrical grid in India is being completely overhauled and upgraded. This deal shows that we can provide great value to the further development of electrical grids. As is the case in many countries across the globe, the production and generation of electricity is no longer the greatest challenge. Instead, it is the distribution of electricity to customers, since electricity usage is becoming increasingly complex while renewable energy is being produced in larger amounts. Maintaining good control over the quality of electricity, recognizing trends in the electrical grid, and intervening before power failures damage critical equipment are becoming increasingly important,” says Magnus Andersson, CEO of Metrum.

Ibrahim Baylan, Swedish Coordinator and Minister for Energy, and Metrum CEO Magnus Andersson.

Metrum has been operating in India for several years, and this deal was made possible largely due to the long-term approach and perseverance of the Swedish state. Metrum has participated in the India-Sweden Innovations’ Accelerator (ISIA) – program run by the Swedish Energy Agency – and has received additional support from the Swedish Energy Agency and Swedfund to implement demonstration projects, among other things, in India. Metrum is also the only Swedish company to be part of Tata Power Delhi Smart Grid Demo Center, an installation coordinated by Business Sweden and inaugurated by the Swedish Minister for Energy, Ibrahim Baylan, and the Swedish Ambassador to India.

“The deal Metrum has undertaken with Tata Power is a good example of what can be achieved through well-functioning cooperation between a smaller Swedish company and the Swedish state. The ISIA program has evolved into an effective platform for proliferating Swedish energy innovation worldwide,” says Ludvig Lindström, Program Director at the Swedish Energy Agency.

India has a sizable need to increase power quality across its huge electrical grid, and Tata Power is one of the companies at the forefront of this development.

“Tata Power is one of the foremost Indian power companies and we have a dialogue with numerous other power grid companies in India together with our local partner, Solvina India, which originally is also a Swedish company. There is no doubt that Metrum, the market leader in Sweden, has the leading solution and that we are very competitive here in India. Not only with regard to our measuring instruments and software applications, but also in terms of our expertise in the field,” says Rebecka Andreasson, Sales Manager in India.
